Compression Lab: Find the Best Image Format and Quality

Stop guessing settings. Upload one image and the lab tests JPG, WebP, AVIF and PNG at several quality levels, then charts file size against similarity to the original.

Choose an image to start.

How to use it

  1. Add your files by dropping them on the tool or choosing them from your device.
  2. Adjust the settings. Results update as you change them.
  3. Download the result.

Pick what matters most and the lab recommends the smallest file that still meets that bar. Click any row to see exactly where quality was lost.

Questions

What does the similarity number mean?

It is PSNR in decibels. Higher means closer to the original. Above about 40 dB differences are very hard to see.

Is the download the same as the tested copy?

No. Tests run on a copy up to 1600 px for speed. The download button re-encodes your full-size image with the chosen settings.
